Wizard of Oz
[edit]Sorry that I haven't checked the Talk page for the Wonderful Wizard of Oz for so long. Anyways, I read your comment from a week ago about different political allegories not mentioned in the list and agree with you completely. Add it in! --Alex S 22:42, 1 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Not a problem, but nothing personal of course, I don't believe we've run across each other before, and I'm pretty sure I havn't edited Assassin in the past. I simply recognized a fairly clear cut situation and felt the need to give you a second :). I added the article to my watchlist some time back because of my great interest in Asymmetric warfare as a viable alternative to the horrors of conventional/WMD warfare, as well as my fascination with the Hashshashin, who I feel to be a role model of combat morality which the terrorists (and nation states) of today could stand to learn from. Rather than specializing in harming civilians, they got much more done morally (IMO). If it wasn't for those pesky (and outdated) rules of war, it would be the leaders and politicans awake at night and nervous, instead of G.I. Joe and his muslim counterpart. I do ramble on, don't I? ;) Sam Spade 03:40, 30 Apr 2004 (UTC)
Ditto, not a problem, keep up the good work! Securiger 12:56, 3 May 2004 (UTC)
AMA
[edit]Yes, you are definitely qualified for the AMA, your concern illustrates that as well as anything. While some have suggested some guidelines, and there have been some mild troubles w potential trolls either joining or editing our policies, it is still is wide open (may not be for much longer however ;) and I suggest you join up if you'd like to help. As far as the mailing list, I don't care for it much myself, but it is true that its where most big decisions are made, and where you have the most access to Jimbo. Anyways, just use this. Have a great day, and feel free to let me know about anyother questions, concerns, or musings you might have :) Cheers, Sam Spade 19:27, 3 May 2004 (UTC)
- I may need it! I'm a sometimes controvercial person ;). Keep in mind that AMA is just getting started, and its extra important to be aware of where its at, and how it is changing. We just appointed the founder as the coordinator, our lead position. He is very democratic and we all should appreciate your input on our policies and agenda, once you find your footing :) Nice having you, Sam Spade 01:35, 4 May 2004 (UTC)
Thanks re. Condorcet example page
[edit]Hi Wally, thanks for the kinds words on my user talk page. I really appreciate it. I will look hard what I can do to improve the article so it will be more useful to others. The biggest question for me is whether I should keep my talk of Condorcet about the tie, or just note it, note the standard rules, effects, and let readers decide for themselves what it suggests. Anyway, your kindness will help encourage me to improve it. --Tomruen 06:05, 8 May 2004 (UTC)
pleased to help. thank you. that business doesn't bother me. Badanedwa 06:20, Jun 13, 2004 (UTC)
Request for AMA assistance
[edit]We have received an anonymous request for AMA assistance from an IP address, I have directed that individual to contact me if they wish not to create a Wikipedia account. If you are interested in helping please let me know and if I hear from this individual I will try and put you in contact. See Wikipedia:AMA Requests for Assistance. Thank you. — © Alex756 03:17, 18 Jun 2004 (UTC)
- Wally, thanks for your comment on my talk page about that annoymous user. I must point out that not everyone who approaches us is going to be asking for mediation or arbitration, they may just need some explanations. This user was asking for help from an advocate. What kind of help this anonymous person was asking for is not clear, but if he (or she) wants the help of an advocate, even just to explain the system to him, I think that is within our balliwick. I think the overarching goal of AMA members is to help an individual understand the system, not to necessarily "represent" them in an official capacity, but also to lend a guiding hand, communicate with them and try to explain the system to them. Even if someone comes to us with what looks to be an accuracy problem they deserve our help in undstanding what kind of situation they are in. We do not refuse to help someone because they are confused? That would defeat the purpose of our organization, wouldn't it? — © Alex756 00:46, 25 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Erik Kuehnelt-Leddihn
[edit]Thanks for your edits on the Erik Kuehnelt-Leddihn. I appreciate it and it looks much better. Thanks. But I disagree with de-linking "von", not many people know about German nobility and it is proper to have it linked. Thanks again.198.108.150.2 14:43, 28 Jun 2004 (UTC)
Hey, I'd be glad to help :). I'm very interested (altho not terribly knowledgable) about all of these matters, and incidentilly have been following/vaguely involved in the discussion at Lyndon LaRouche. I'm a bit busy at the moment, but I've put them all on my watchlist and will take a long look at them in the near future. Cheers, Sam [Spade] 19:30, 29 Jun 2004 (UTC)
AMA request
[edit]I left a note for danny on this, since then the page has been dumped back into edit war. I am dubious of the virtues of a mediation process that seems to be ignored almost instantly.
Stirling Newberry 16:53, 7 Jul 2004 (UTC)
- If by "handled" you mean, "degenerating into a nasty interpersonal slanging match", yes, it is being "handled". But I wouldn't hold up what is about to happen as an exemplar of collegially resolving disputes among contributors of good faith either. I am disappointed that wiki does not have enough discipline to uphold its own policies, and that it is going to require unpleasantness to escalate to deal with the problem. I feel that mediation is superior to other forms of dispute resolution, but it does require more patience, which is the quantity that wiki seems to be in short supply of. Tampa Wikimeet
[edit]Pardon the impersonality; I'm pasting this on every Wikiuser's page who lives in eastern Florida. We're scheduling a Wikimeet this Saturday, September 11. Jimbo still has to decide the place but he's looking into Panera Bread locations here in Tampa. Please post on User:Jimbo Wales and tell us if you're interested in coming. Thanks! AMA
[edit]You posted to my user page re AMA. I could use some advice in a few areas. One is the complaint by "lugnut" (anon) against User:Francs2000. I'm certain that there was probably a misunderstanding possibly based on a case of mistaken identity, but without a constant ID on the anon, I can't track the root of the problem. I've had some difficulty contacting this person but when they did get back to me, they admitted they couldn't remember where the incidents had occured. I submitted a SQL query to help find other edits by people at that user's ISP but I've no idea if it will ever be processed.
I'm also looking for some advice re principle. I've been a commenter on an existing arbitration, and have approached the "defendant" (for lack of a better term; that's certainly how it's playing out) about advocacy. His response was that he was fine with my involvement but also expressed that he didn't want to have anything to do with the case. Should I try to take things on anyway, or should I just butt out?
TIA, [[User:KeithTyler|Keith D. Tyler [flame]]] 21:33, Dec 20, 2004 (UTC)
- Thanks for the input. Re Lug vs. Francs2000, I was able to find his comment to Francs -- which itself was quite vitriolic. Of course, it was lug that has asked for assistance, and not Francs, so I'm attempting to track this down in the interest in getting to the bottom of the anon's complaint.
- Re my other issue -- you have it more or less correct, the user tacitly accepted my offer of assistance but made it clear that they did not want to participate any longer. Given the messiness of the case, I don't see how I can really help if I can't rely on the user to be available to give me more detail on various pieces of evidence and events in order to help present his case. The user feels he is being railroaded, and to some extent I agree. On the other hand, it was me that offered him assistance, not the other way around. - [[User:KeithTyler|Keith D. Tyler [flame]]] 06:59, Dec 21, 2004 (UTC)
Re: Deaf -- Sure, I should be able to serve for Dcreemer in the Deaf mediation. - Keith D. Tyler [flame] 21:22, Jan 3, 2005 (UTC)
Deaf Article
[edit]- Wally, I definitely want to go with the mediator. I've prepared a lot of material already, as per your suggestion, and I'll fine-tune it while I'm waiting for the mediator to be named. I'll hold off posting what I've compiled until I hear from someone either on my talk page or the article's talk page. Thank you for you kind assistance. Ray Foster 21:20, 26 Dec 2004 (UTC)
Mediation seems like a good idea to me too -- I don't get the sense that Mr. Foster & I are at war with each other -- we are just approaching this topic from two different life experiences, etc. So what's the next step? --Dcreemer 02:58, 31 Dec 2004 (UTC)
Hi Wally- as you can see, I'm new to Wikipedia as well, so yes, I would like to have an advocate in this dispute process as well. I agree that there are no hard feelings between Mr. Foster & I (as far as I can tell, that is), but the issue is certainly sensitive, and in my limited experience can get out of hand. --Dcreemer 03:15, 31 Dec 2004 (UTC)
Wally, I agree. I've always believed that if Dcreemer would simple talk - say *anything* - we could resolve the problem. But it's been a situation in which he just plain remains silent. How does one engage another that simple doesn't respond? I thank you for your efforts. I'm optimistic that we'll have a satisfactory resolution within hours of his *finally* saying something. Ray Foster 02:30, 1 Jan 2005 (UTC)
Wally, based on the input I've had from Keith, I've decided to decline advocacy and mediation at this time. I feel optimistic that the contributors to the Deaf article can move forward in a constructive manner and I think all this waiting around is becoming a negative influence. I'm going to write a notice on the Request for Mediation article that I've declined assistance at this time. I do hope that will be of help. Now that I've made this decision, is there any reason I need to leave the "Do not edit" notice on the article's talk page? I have a major revision I'd like to add. I plan to post it on the Talk page first to get feedback and hopefully it we can all come to some agreement on it. Thank you for you kind assistance. Ray Foster 18:49, 6 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- Ray and Wally: I did not mean to suggest that advocacy would not be useful here. I think that some dispute resolution (though not perhaps mediation) may be warranted, and considering that both you and my party are fairly new users, you would benefit from some assistance in figuring out the best resolution. It is fair to say that I don't think this issue should affect or impede the progress of the Deaf article, especially considering my party's comparatively lower availability. Try and bring in more people, corral the other editors of the article (and related articles like Hearing impairment), and combine efforts to get the article to both cross-POV and NPOV, would be my best advice. Ray: I am not your advocate, Wally is, so you should discuss this fully with him. - Keith D. Tyler [flame] 19:54, Jan 6, 2005 (UTC)
Wally. I am humbled and grateful for you guidance. I didn't actually consult with Keith D. Tyler. Keith's saying I though *he* was my advocate was because of an error in my sentence. I didn't think he was. I knew you were my advocate. I just read his explanation about the use of Mediation and RFC on the Deaf article Talk page and decided that since there seems to be almost no input on the article outside of the original dispute, it was really only a matter of correcting the language and moving forward carefully. I'm certain I would have learned a great deal by going through the mediation process with you. It would have been an excellent way to learn about Wiki practices alongside someone who has "been around the block a few time." Thank you once again. I appreciate your kind offer of being available to me. I know I must bear most of the burden of learing the Wiki system, but it's nice to know there's an old hand around to bounce questions off of. :-) Ray Foster 22:00, 6 Jan 2005 (UTC)
Dcreemer
[edit]Wally: I've tried to contact Dcreemer to confirm he accepts me as his advocate, but he hasn't responded yet. I will plan to fill in that gap until I hear a yes or no from him. (I assume he is not picky about who is his advocate, or else he would have made a more specific request.) My impression, based on his edit history pattern, that he does not get online very often, or at least does not visit WP more often than once every two weeks or so.
I would like to know why you proposed this issue for mediation. There seems to have been a very small amount of incident material here, amounting to perhaps to two edits and three comments from Dcreemer over the course of a month. Already Ray is viewing mediation as a method of resolving an issue over article content, not an issue with Dcreemer, and is amassing topic references instead of incident references.
My guess is that if it does go to mediation, it might not turn out as expected. But in any case, a Talk page poll and/or RfC seems to be the proper next step. - Keith D. Tyler [flame] 01:00, Jan 6, 2005 (UTC)
Links
[edit]When the term in a link is a prefix of the linked word, the preferred style is, for example, [[cartel]]ists rather than [[cartel|cartelists]]. The end user sees the same thing either way, but there is a longstanding consensus that the former is easier to maintain. -- Jmabel | Talk 23:29, Dec 27, 2004 (UTC)
I saw your contributions to Leo Ryan, which I find good but a bit one sided because he must have done more than visiting Jonestown. Since you seem to know about the subject I want to request you to expand Jim Jones. I know a lot too but to write it down is a different matter. Andries 13:51, 2 Jan 2005 (UTC)
Call for AMA election
[edit]AMA Member Advocate,
There's a poll currently in the AMA Homepage about making a new AMA Coordinator election. Please, cast your vote there (though it's not mandatory). Any comments you have about this, write it on the AMA Homepage talk page. Cheers, --Neigel von Teighen 18:43, 4 Jan 2005 (UTC)
Proposals for AMA Membership Meeting
[edit]As AMA Coordinator I am requesting that suggestions be placed on Wikipedia:AMA Membership Meeting plans for our first membership meeting, to be held in the near future, (hopefully before any election occurs.) Since we have never had any kind of "official" meeting we need to discuss how this will occur (i.e. Wiki pages or IRC channel), how it will be structured (i.e. meeting agenda) and if there will be any "chair" to supervise the meeting and meeting "secretary" to write up minutes or keep some kind of official record of what transpires. Thanks in advance for your input and your continued work as an advocate. — © Alex756 20:48, 5 Jan 2005 (UTC)
What is the strange code you inserted into the article and why did you insert it? Halibutt 02:57, Jan 10, 2005 (UTC)
- Sad story, really. Those spam-makers are really doing their best to make our life harder. Of course I'll correct the link you proposed. Good luck with your search for cure for your browser. BTW, how about switching to Mozilla Firefox? IMO it's the best browser around and I've never had any infection problems with it. As a matter of fact the number of viruses my anti-virus scanner finds has dropped to some 10% after I changed from Internet Exploiter to Mozilla and then to Firefox.

Deputy Sheriff Wally?
[edit]Wally, since you have made some suggestions about holding a meeting on IRC on Sunday perhaps you can help me get it organized. Do you have any idea about which channel we can use and some simple way we can let all the members know (I am afraid it might even be kind of short notice for the 16th, but better even if it is just some kind of run through with a few people participating, that way we can get the ball rolling.) Also if we set the two Sunday dates then I (maybe with your help) post an announcement on all the members talk pages) so they have due and timely notice (after all we are advocating for principles of due process and fundamental justice which relies upon such notice often) and maybe the kick off meeting will be the second date, with the first one being just a preliminary planning meeting. Let me know what you think on my talk page. Thanks. — © Alex756 02:43, 15 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- I think the times you suggested are fine. I am going to post that on the discussion page. Maybe you can give directions on how to long onto the IRC channel there, let' just call it a test meeting. — © Alex756 02:40, 16 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- Sam Spade and I are on IRC freenode #AMA right now and will be there past 2 PM Eastern Time as you suggested Wally, hope you can join us. — © Alex756 18:19, 16 Jan 2005 (UTC)
