The year 2000 in film involved some significant events. The top grosser worldwide was Mission: Impossible 2.[1] Domestically in North America, Gladiator won the Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Actor (Russell Crowe).[2] Dinosaur was the most expensive film of 2000 and a box-office success.[1]

2000 box office records
[edit]- Chicken Run became the highest-grossing stop motion animated film ever.
- X-Men's $57.5 million opening weekend surpassed Batman Forever for achieving the highest for a superhero film,[5] as well as Men in Black for having the highest for a non-sequel and a July release.[6]
- Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas's $55.1 million opening weekend became the highest debut for a Christmas-themed film. It had the highest opening weekend for a Jim Carrey film and a Ron Howard film, surpassing both Batman Forever and Ransom simultaneously.[7]
